(or the one with the party food)

With so much going on this week (start of Holy Week) and a ‘different’ end to the meeting we had to open with Notices. Then the lights were brought down and a backlit cross image shown on all screens – we hired in and set up extra screens for this month, more details later. So, we opened with the cross on the screens and some classical music. Then some scripture was read to move this from the cross the the resurrection while the images changed from the cross to a sunrise video and the mood of the music lifted.Gordon then preached about the Resurrection and what it means to us now – mp3 here.We then wanted a ‘party mood’ to celebrate the resurrection. Firstly this was an upbeat time of worship and this was why we had all the extra screens to build the mood and create a bit of a club like atmosphere. This also guided the images used which were faster paced than what we typically use.

All of this part of the service was shorter than usual and the next part was introduced as still very much being part of the worship service – we moved over to the side where party food was served and people mingled for a while. Again, emphasizing different ways of celebrating and remembering the resurrection.

(or the one with the torn poster)

We experimented (as always) with a new entrance way half way down the RHS by lifting the fabric up in the middle, this seemed to feed people in a little better than normal where everyone gathers at the back and there is lots of room at the front. After a couple of songs the “Message Section” began. This was a combination of Gordon speaking interwoven with, JJ leading a meditation / activity and several people taking part in a drama in order to present the topics of Judgment and the Cross in an engaging way rather than simply ‘talking at’ people. The drama was in two parts and involved people comparing pieces of card ranging from black through greys to white. They sorted themselves into an order, then each person compared their card with a central character (God) and all fell short of the ‘white’ that was required. In the second part these people came from the ‘not good enough’ side, and placed their grey cards at Jesus feet, he gave them a bright white card which could compare with God’s and permit them to the ‘good enough’ side. This was all done in silence.JJ’s meditation (I don’t have with me) but the activity involved people going up and sticking their thoughts – brought up by this meditation – on postit notes and sticking them to a poster – this was a picture of the creation image form the Sistine Chapel mainly because it was the only suitable poster we could find. To surprise people out of this ‘nice Christine atmosphere’ after a suitable pause and in complete silence JJ took down this poster and ripped it up, then asked people how they felt and if these things that had been written really made any difference.

Among this was Gordon’s talk. Both Gordon and JJ were recorded but because of a technical fault we missed the very end of Gordon’s message (sorry) 3.

During the responsive worship there was an opportunity for prayer ministry and a cup of juice /non-alcoholic wine was available for people to make a physical response by coming forward to drink from this cup.

“Everything you ever wanted to know about human nature but were afraid to ask” Jan 2008 by grayza

(or the one with the Russian Dolls)

On the way in people were asked to write down a ‘human characteristic’ and place this into a large human figure marked out on the floor. As they arrived into the middle worship space a video loop of words that describes characteristics or attributes of Jesus was showing. This video remained on a group of TVs all evening and was used several times for continuity throughout the service. After an opening sung worship set, Jenny drew a distinction between what had been displayed as ‘Attributes of Jesus’ compared with some of the human attributes written by people as they entered. Then led a meditation using some Russian Dolls with each smaller doll the following questions were asked and time given for reflection:– Who is the me that the world sees? (Your labels – appearance, role, etc.)
– Who is the me that my acquaintances see? (Colleagues, people in shops, hairdresser, etc.)
– Who is the me that my friends and family see?
– Who is the me that those closest see?
– Who is the me that only I see? (Have we got a hidden side?)
– Who is the me that God sees?
Following Jenny’s talk (download here) the process was reveresed thinking about the smallest Russian Doll representing our innermost being…- Who is the me that God created?
– Who is the me that I could see?
– Would it make a difference to the person that those closest see?
– Would it make a difference in all my relationships?
– Would it make a difference to those I only know at surface level?
– Would it make a difference to the people I pass in the street? The following worship set included extended prayer ministry time with the prayer team moving among the congregation.

Started this with a video contrasting animal and human mating behaviour (best way I can describe it). Then Gordon spoke (mp3 here) with a break for a drama and for an ‘Exhibition of Wonder” This was followed by a song by Paul and then a time of worship and prayer ministry.The Exhibition of Wonder included;

  • a time of reflexion in the main area with a video of a father and his sons.
  • a chill out area with a video of waves crashing on a beach.
  • a table of sumptuous food.
  • a photographic exhibition.

“Giving God” Sep 2007 by grayza

Based on Parable of Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) we took the angle on this that God gave us (all human kind) creation and everything in it for us to take care of – what had we done with what we have been given? The setup was four screens surrounding those attending the service with an opening section that used all these screens in the following way ( screen 1 was at the front, 2 to the right hand side, 3 at the back, 4 to the left):ONE:
A voice off stage says “First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don’t see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.” During this two different videos of stars becoming creation are shown on the four screens. Voice says “And God saw that it was good.”TWO:
A narrator walks to screen one and says “God spoke: “Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life!”” a video is shown on that screen only of fish in the ocean, while the narrator watches. The narrator moves to screen two and says “God spoke: “Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!”” a video is shown on that screen only of birds flying. The narrator moves to screen three and says “Earth, generate life! Every sort and kind: cattle and reptiles and wild animals—all kinds.” a video of ‘every animal’ appears on the screen. The narrator moves to screen four and says “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.” during which a video of people walking around in modern day Glasgow is shown. Narrator says “God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them: “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”
All screens remain playing their own videos till narrator leaves.THREE:
A series of questions then appear Q1 on screen one moving from left to right, then Q2 on screen two moving clockwise around the room… questions were:1 Where did you come from?
2 What sort of family do you belong to?
3 How many people do you make contact with in an average week?
4 What makes you uniquely you?
—————
5 Think about your body and all the complex processes that created it.
6 In what ways have you used your body today?
7 Are you healthy?
8 How do you think about things – creatively, analytically, some other way?
—————
9 What are you good at?
10 What qualifications have you got?
11 What is your favourite possession?
12 How many different things do you do in a week?
—————
13 How much money do you earn? How are you using it?
14 How much spare time do you have? How are you using it?
15 How much energy have you got? How are you using it?
16 What are you doing with the things that you own?FOUR:
At the end of these questions all four screens start showing plants sprouting and growing. People start to move around those in the meeting, giving out small ‘favour boxes’ with a seed and the following verse ““Those who are trusted with something valuable must show that they are worthy of that trust” 1 Corinthians 4:2.”After all that David said thisThen the worship band came on and towards the end an opportunity was made to respond to this by bringing forward the boxes that were given out (see photos below) and prater ministry was available as always.

We gave everyone an ice cube as they came in.The service opened with the “Jesus of Revelations” video, followed by the main worship set. This was followed by the email video of the reading and Jenny’s sermon. In response to the message people were given the oportunity to visit three stations as follows (as well as prayer ministry being available):

  • They were given a blank cheque to write down things that they feel are too important to them and therefore preventing them having the gold that Jesus offers. These were then exchanged for gold nuggets.
  • People were given a length of black wool with a label for people to write on, they were to think about what we are known for (how we are labeled) this was exchanged for a piece of white fabric with a message written on it.
  • In a blacked out, darkened room a recorded meditation was looped for people to go in and listen to. (sorry there are no photos of the blacked out room)

Following this there was a closing worship set.all photos here

“You’ve Got Mail – Philadelphia: When you’re not strong, hold on” June 2007 by grayza

The letter to Philadelphia talks about doors being opened and pillars being written on. We took the later part of this for the action that people would do during the meeting. We opened the service with the “Jesus of Revelations” video, followed by songs, leading into the reading (email video) then Davids sermon.

Following this Rachel led a meditation which ended by getting people to write on the pillars in the church. They were to write their own name on one pillar, the name of someone who has supported them in their faith and lastly write the name of someone they want to support or pray for.

The service was closed with some more sung worship and an opportunity for prayer ministry. On a practical note, in order to enable the writing on the pillars we used the hanging drapes and drew the bottom of these out (as you can see here and here). Another top tip is that being paranoid about the pen going through the paper that we wrapped around the pillars we first wrapped them with cling-film.all photos here

“You’ve Got Mail – Sardis: Wake Up!” MAY 2007 by grayza
April 24, 2008, 11:02 pm

We started sharp on 6:30 with a time of worship which I think lasted about 15 minutes or so. Then straight into the ’email video’ to the church at Sardis.

Following on from that was the drama & sermon (see the photos below). The drama started by introducing some strawberry pickers who were the best strawberry pickers around, then Jenny did the first section of her talk. This switched the action back to the strawberry pickers who decided to have a little rest before picking any more fruit as they fell asleep Jenny spoke again and in the final act the owner of the strawberry field found the pickers asleep with the crop rotten and threw them out of the field, and the third part of the sermon closed this section.

This alternating focus between drama and sermon worked very well and helped bring the passage to life.

This was followed by a challenging meditation of self examination led by JJ and followed by a time of reflection on this with music from T & J and random visuals.

We closed the service with the Jesus of Revelation video and by inviting everyone to move towards the kitchen area a) fro strawberries and cream, b) to receive a card reminding them of the meditation and with follow up prayer notes and c) for a retireal offering.

Jenny’s sermon (without the drama bits) and the led-meditation can be downloaded here
